PKK declares ceasefire following Öcalan’s call

The Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) on March 1 declared a ceasefire, in line with leader Abdullah Öcalan’s call.
The PKK Executive Committee’s statement affirmed its support for Öcalan’s Feb. 27 call, and vowed to fulfill its requirements, according to reporting by the Fırat News Agency.
The PKK’s statement aligned with an additional note that Öcalan sent to the İmralı Delegation, which was not included in his letter.
“We fully endorse the content of this call and pledge to comply with and implement its requirements from our side. However, we emphasize that for success, a suitable environment for democratic politics and legal recognition must also be ensured,” the statement said.
The PKK announced that it declared a ceasefire as of March 1, and that “unless attacked, no armed actions will be carried out by (their) forces.”
“The practical implementation of disarmament can only be realized under the direct leadership of Leader Apo [Öcalan],” continued the statement.
The PKK also argued that a safe environment must be established for its congress to convene and that Öcalan must personally oversee the congress.
The İmralı Delegation had announced Öcalan’s message following their third meeting with him at İmralı Prison, where he has been held since 1999.
In his message, Öcalan made a call for disarmament, saying he was “taking on the historic responsibility for it.”
“As every contemporary community and party that has not been forcibly dismantled would do voluntarily, convene your congress to integrate with the state and society, make a decision, all groups should lay down arms, and the PKK should dissolve itself,” asserted the leader, claiming that the conditions in which the PKK formed were no longer present.
İmralı Delegation member Sırrı Süreyya Önder also shared a note that Öcalan conveyed to the delegation at the end of their meeting. The note stated, “While presenting this perspective, it is evident that disarmament and the dissolution of the PKK require the recognition of democratic politics and a legal framework.”

Local authorities in the southeastern province of Şanlıurfa have implemented strict measures to combat student absenteeism, including fines for parents who do not ensure their children attend school.

According to a statement from the governor’s office, parents of students who miss school will face a fine of 257 Turkish Liras ($7) per day. If absences persist despite warnings, an additional penalty of 11,977 Liras ($326) will be imposed on the parents.
To promote better attendance, school administrators are required to send an SMS notification to parents on the fifth day of a student’s absence. If the absence continues, an official warning letter will be sent to the parents on the tenth day, as highlighted in the statement.
The decision follows Governor Hasan Şıldak’s directive to prioritize the issue of absenteeism and take prompt action to enforce compulsory education laws.
The governor noted that the issue of school absenteeism is regrettably one of Şanlıurfa’s core challenges. According to Şıldak, around 10 percent of primary and middle school students and nearly 20 percent of high school students are persistently absent across the province.
Şıldak emphasized that efforts are underway to identify and implement effective solutions for educational challenges in Şanlıurfa, which has the youngest population in Türkiye.

Istanbul is bracing for an extreme weather shift this weekend, with record-high temperatures driven by warm air and desert dust from North Africa expected before a sudden drop at the start of the new week, warns a meteorologist.

Last month, temperatures dropped sharply as snowfall blanketed Istanbul and many other regions of the country; however, following this bitter cold snap, temperatures have recently surged above seasonal averages in the metropolis.
“Until Sunday [March 16], temperatures will rise and desert dust will reach the city, with that day expected to witness the highest temperatures,” explained Adil Tek, a meteorological engineer at Kandilli Observatory.
Tek indicated that Istanbul might face extraordinary heat, potentially surpassing a 110-year record, with temperatures unseasonably climbing to 27-28 degrees Celsius during this period.
“We have never observed such high temperatures for this time of year,” Tek explained, linking the trend to climate change.
Saharan dust, which is currently impacting western Türkiye, will begin to lose its effect starting March 16, Tek noted. However, he recommended that individuals with respiratory conditions and the elderly take precautions over the weekend, such as wearing masks and limiting outdoor activities.

After the unseasonable warmth and dust clouds, a swift temperature drop is anticipated early next week as a cold snap moves in from the north, bringing rain to Istanbul and potentially snow to other parts of Türkiye.
“Temperatures will drop significantly, and snowfall is likely in the western Black Sea, central regions, inner Aegean and Eastern Anatolia, including Ankara,” Tek noted, emphasizing that residents should brace for drastic changes as winter conditions could return by midweek.
