Turkish prosecutors seek up to 12-year prison terms for Istanbul Bar officials

An Istanbul Prosecutor’s Office has sought up to 12 years in prison for Istanbul Bar Association President Prof. İbrahim Kaboğlu and ten executive board members on charges of “terrorist propaganda” and “publicly spreading misleading information.”
The investigation stemmed from a social media post by the Istanbul Bar Association regarding the deaths of journalists Nazım Daştan and Cihan Bilgin in Syria.
If the court grants permission for prosecution, the case will be transferred to the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office and opened as a “terrorism” trial.
The indictment, drafted about a month ago, was released ahead of the March 4 hearing of a separate case seeking the removal of Kaboğlu and the board members from office and the election of new members. That case also cited the Attorneyship Law to justify a call for new elections at the Bar Association.
The indictment, which surfaced publicly on Feb. 25, alleged that the bar association’s statement legitimized a “terrorist organization” and disrupted public order.
The prosecution claimed that the statement aimed to “legitimize and promote separatist activities,” which it described as the ultimate goal of the terrorist organization.
It also argued that referring to the deceased individuals as “journalists targeted in a conflict zone” encouraged membership in the organization.
Prosecutors further alleged that the statement sought to mislead the public with false information about national and public security, erode trust in state institutions, and incite fear, panic, or anxiety. The indictment claimed that the statement’s viewership on social media indicated its potential to disrupt public peace.
In a Feb. 17 response submitted to the chief prosecutor’s office, the Istanbul Bar Association denied the accusations.
It stated, “No state institution or entity was accused in any way. A text was issued in accordance with Articles 76 and 95 of the Attorneyship Law, defending the rule of law, human rights, and the right to life. These facts clearly show that the allegations in the investigation are baseless.”

Local authorities in the southeastern province of Şanlıurfa have implemented strict measures to combat student absenteeism, including fines for parents who do not ensure their children attend school.

According to a statement from the governor’s office, parents of students who miss school will face a fine of 257 Turkish Liras ($7) per day. If absences persist despite warnings, an additional penalty of 11,977 Liras ($326) will be imposed on the parents.
To promote better attendance, school administrators are required to send an SMS notification to parents on the fifth day of a student’s absence. If the absence continues, an official warning letter will be sent to the parents on the tenth day, as highlighted in the statement.
The decision follows Governor Hasan Şıldak’s directive to prioritize the issue of absenteeism and take prompt action to enforce compulsory education laws.
The governor noted that the issue of school absenteeism is regrettably one of Şanlıurfa’s core challenges. According to Şıldak, around 10 percent of primary and middle school students and nearly 20 percent of high school students are persistently absent across the province.
Şıldak emphasized that efforts are underway to identify and implement effective solutions for educational challenges in Şanlıurfa, which has the youngest population in Türkiye.

Istanbul is bracing for an extreme weather shift this weekend, with record-high temperatures driven by warm air and desert dust from North Africa expected before a sudden drop at the start of the new week, warns a meteorologist.

Last month, temperatures dropped sharply as snowfall blanketed Istanbul and many other regions of the country; however, following this bitter cold snap, temperatures have recently surged above seasonal averages in the metropolis.
“Until Sunday [March 16], temperatures will rise and desert dust will reach the city, with that day expected to witness the highest temperatures,” explained Adil Tek, a meteorological engineer at Kandilli Observatory.
Tek indicated that Istanbul might face extraordinary heat, potentially surpassing a 110-year record, with temperatures unseasonably climbing to 27-28 degrees Celsius during this period.
“We have never observed such high temperatures for this time of year,” Tek explained, linking the trend to climate change.
Saharan dust, which is currently impacting western Türkiye, will begin to lose its effect starting March 16, Tek noted. However, he recommended that individuals with respiratory conditions and the elderly take precautions over the weekend, such as wearing masks and limiting outdoor activities.

After the unseasonable warmth and dust clouds, a swift temperature drop is anticipated early next week as a cold snap moves in from the north, bringing rain to Istanbul and potentially snow to other parts of Türkiye.
“Temperatures will drop significantly, and snowfall is likely in the western Black Sea, central regions, inner Aegean and Eastern Anatolia, including Ankara,” Tek noted, emphasizing that residents should brace for drastic changes as winter conditions could return by midweek.
