İmamoğlu says he’s not after office, but ‘a tough fight’
Duvar English
Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu on Feb. 6 shared a video regarding his newly announced campaign for the presidency on his social media accounts.
Önce aday, sonra Cumhurbaşkanı olma iddiasıyla yola çıkıyorum.

In the video, İmamoğlu says he was not after the office, but “a tough fight.”
He said that his only concern and dream was to rebuild the state structure, the economy, democracy, and the law that “the government has destroyed,” and to “make the state the guardian of the nation’s interests and the nation’s security, not a handful of people.”
“We can change this corrupt order only through a principled, virtuous solidarity, every step of which is determined by the broadest consensus,” he added.
The first step of this consensus is the primary that his Republican People’s Party (CHP) will hold this month, the popular mayor noted.
The CHP will hold a primary on March 23 to name its presidential candidate, which is an unusual move in Turkish politics.
İmamoğlu is the only candidate in the primary in which all CHP members can vote.
“We will put forward the will of our party on March 23rd and turn to all the republicans, democrats, and patriots of this country and say, there is no salvation, alone! Let’s all take charge together,” İmamoğlu added.
İmamoğlu is facing several judicial investigations and can get a political ban as he is regarded a strong rival against President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
The elections are scheduled for 2028 but the CHP is pressuring the government to hold an early election this year.

Southeastern city enforces fines to tackle student absenteeism
ŞANLIURFA
Local authorities in the southeastern province of Şanlıurfa have implemented strict measures to combat student absenteeism, including fines for parents who do not ensure their children attend school.
class=”cf”>
According to a statement from the governor’s office, parents of students who miss school will face a fine of 257 Turkish Liras ($7) per day. If absences persist despite warnings, an additional penalty of 11,977 Liras ($326) will be imposed on the parents.
To promote better attendance, school administrators are required to send an SMS notification to parents on the fifth day of a student’s absence. If the absence continues, an official warning letter will be sent to the parents on the tenth day, as highlighted in the statement.
The decision follows Governor Hasan Şıldak’s directive to prioritize the issue of absenteeism and take prompt action to enforce compulsory education laws.
The governor noted that the issue of school absenteeism is regrettably one of Şanlıurfa’s core challenges. According to Şıldak, around 10 percent of primary and middle school students and nearly 20 percent of high school students are persistently absent across the province.
Şıldak emphasized that efforts are underway to identify and implement effective solutions for educational challenges in Şanlıurfa, which has the youngest population in Türkiye.

Trump Yönetimi, 43 Ülkenin Vatandaşlarına Seyahat Yasağı getirdi.
16 Mart 2025 – Eski ABD Başkanı Donald Trump’ın yeniden göreve gelmesi halinde 43 ülkenin vatandaşlarına seyahat yasağı getirmeyi planladığı iddia ediliyor. The New York Times’a atfedilen bir görsele göre, önerilen yasağın ülkeleri üç kategoriye ayırdığı belirtiliyor: kırmızı, turuncu ve sarı.

Istanbul ‘may break 110-year temperature record for March’
ISTANBUL
Istanbul is bracing for an extreme weather shift this weekend, with record-high temperatures driven by warm air and desert dust from North Africa expected before a sudden drop at the start of the new week, warns a meteorologist.
class=”cf”>
Last month, temperatures dropped sharply as snowfall blanketed Istanbul and many other regions of the country; however, following this bitter cold snap, temperatures have recently surged above seasonal averages in the metropolis.
“Until Sunday [March 16], temperatures will rise and desert dust will reach the city, with that day expected to witness the highest temperatures,” explained Adil Tek, a meteorological engineer at Kandilli Observatory.
Tek indicated that Istanbul might face extraordinary heat, potentially surpassing a 110-year record, with temperatures unseasonably climbing to 27-28 degrees Celsius during this period.
“We have never observed such high temperatures for this time of year,” Tek explained, linking the trend to climate change.
Saharan dust, which is currently impacting western Türkiye, will begin to lose its effect starting March 16, Tek noted. However, he recommended that individuals with respiratory conditions and the elderly take precautions over the weekend, such as wearing masks and limiting outdoor activities.
class=”cf”>
After the unseasonable warmth and dust clouds, a swift temperature drop is anticipated early next week as a cold snap moves in from the north, bringing rain to Istanbul and potentially snow to other parts of Türkiye.
“Temperatures will drop significantly, and snowfall is likely in the western Black Sea, central regions, inner Aegean and Eastern Anatolia, including Ankara,” Tek noted, emphasizing that residents should brace for drastic changes as winter conditions could return by midweek.
