First Lady Erdoğan spoke at the Opening of the Zero Waste Forum: Zero waste is a bridge connecting all roads
In her speech here, First Lady Erdoğan stated that Istanbul is the world’s longest-lasting capital, which carries the common memory of humanity, where civilizations meet, and that they hosted representatives from 183 countries, more than 500 institutions and organizations, and more than 5 thousand participants at the forum today. First Lady Erdoğan stated that Istanbul once again brings cultures together and said, “For this very reason, we see this forum as a historical meeting where the human family is united around a common ideal. This strong international participation is the result of our President’s statement ‘The world is bigger than five because humanity is bigger than five.’ “I think it is a concrete manifestation of his message.” he said.
Stating that he expressed his gratitude to everyone who participated in the forum, Erdoğan continued: “I hope that the synergy that will arise from here will lead to brand new beginnings for our common future. For this meaningful meeting, I would like to thank our Zero Waste Foundation for the great effort they put in organizing the forum. They host one of the most comprehensive international environmental meetings in the world. I congratulate every member of our foundation and applaud them wholeheartedly. I would also like to express my gratitude to our supporting Ministries and the Governorship of Istanbul.”
RESOURCES ARE USED RUDELY
First Lady Erdoğan noted that there is a garbage continent of 1.6 million square kilometers in size, consisting of tons of garbage and plastic, in the north of the Pacific Ocean, and that it stands in the middle of that vast blue as a monument to the drama of humanity using its resources brutally and the bottleneck it passed through. Pointing out that this waste accumulation, which has a surface area almost twice the size of Türkiye, explains the waste and consumption crisis behind the climate crisis, Erdoğan said, “The fact that plastic waste equivalent to 2 thousand garbage trucks every day mixes with the oceans is not only an issue related to waste management. Just as microplastics reaching even the most remote corners of our world, from Antarctica to the summit of Everest, is not an ordinary environmental pollution.” made his assessment.
Erdoğan stated that all of these tell an ignored truth, that more has been produced than ever before in human history, and greater prosperity has been accumulated than ever before. “If you look at landfills today, they are full of clothes that would last several generations, items that have been sacrificed to planned obsolescence, and food that we sort out just because we don’t like the shape of it.” Erdogan said, but he also said that millions of people in the world cannot even meet their basic needs.
Stating that even if one looks only at the amount of waste produced, without looking at any other data, it is clearly seen that there is a great injustice growing alongside this prosperity, Erdoğan said, “In other words, the use-throw, throw-forget, think-consume mentality consumes the inherent values of humanity along with natural resources. The consumption culture that develops with industrialization, on the one hand, builds a false comfort zone from plastics, while on the other hand, it greatly damages the common sense and conscience of humanity. Here is humanity, a broken justice with a heavy ecological burden on the future.” “Instead of increasing collective happiness by sharing what we have with the morality of keeping others alive, we turn what we have into waste.” made his evaluations.
MOVED TO A NEW LEVEL
First Lady Erdoğan underlined that they see zero waste as the ticket of humanity’s journey back to the essence, and pointed out that they believe that as it becomes widespread, human values as well as nature will improve. Stating that this understanding forms the intellectual foundations of the Zero Waste Movement, which they started in 2017 by saying ‘The World is Our Common Home’, Erdoğan stated that the Zero Waste Foundation, which they established in 2023, took the zero waste vision to a new level in the international arena with its initiatives carried out on a global scale, and made significant contributions to the integration of zero waste with the topics of climate action, circular economy, sustainable cities, resource efficiency, food systems and social resilience.
Türkiye WILL HOST
First Lady Erdoğan said:
“The fact that this year’s forum coincides with the COP31 Climate Summit, which will be hosted by Türkiye, is an important opportunity to explain the strategic value of zero waste in the fight against climate change. Because although there are many ways to combat climate change, zero waste is a bridge that unites all these ways. In fact, it is the most transformative power of the climate struggle. Therefore, we see this year’s forum as an important milestone on the way to the COP31 Climate Summit, which will be hosted by Türkiye. We propose zero waste as a climate action before the summit. I believe that the forum Each dialogue discussed within the scope will make significant contributions to understanding the central role of zero waste. Every year, 5.8 trillion plates of food are wasted in the field, on the table, in restaurants and in the market. We use almost one third of the agricultural land just to produce the food that will be wasted. Moreover, this scale of waste brings about the deterioration of ecosystems. “14 percent of this is due to food waste. When we look at the human cost, we see an equally heavy and sad picture. We live in a world where 673 million people are struggling with hunger and more than 2 billion people are undernourished.”
IT IS A VERY HEAVY BURDEN OF CONSCIENCE
First Lady Erdoğan explained that half of the children who died before the age of 5 died of hunger, and even while speaking in this hall today, a child in one corner of the world is struggling to survive in the grip of hunger. Mentioning that a mother or father is consumed with the grief of not being able to feed their child, Erdoğan said, “The most painful part is that we cannot eliminate this grave contradiction, even though we know that we can end global hunger by saving only a quarter of the food we throw away. While on the one hand, garbage bins are overflowing and untouched foods are loaded into garbage trucks, on the other hand, empty plates and fading hopes are a heavy burden of conscience for all of us.” he said.
Pointing out that many people have the right to every wasted bite, whether their survival depends on that bite or not, Erdoğan emphasized that 60 percent of food waste occurs at home. Underlining that Türkiye has carried out exemplary work on food waste, First Lady Erdoğan said, “We reduced waste by 40 percent with the ‘Bread Waste Prevention Campaign’ that we launched in 2008. During our G-20 Term Presidency in 2015, we brought the theme of ‘Reducing Food Losses and Waste within the Scope of Sustainable Food Systems’ to the international agenda. As a result of these efforts, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization “The Technical Platform for Measuring and Reducing Food Loss and Waste was established in Rome in 2020. We reached millions of citizens through the ‘Protect Your Food, Protect Your Table’ campaign, which we implemented in cooperation with the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization. This initiative was shown as an example of best practice by the United Nations.” gave the information.
Pointing out that by choosing the theme of food waste for “30 March International Zero Waste Day” this year, they have once again brought the issue to the global agenda under the umbrella of the United Nations, Erdogan said that with all these steps, they have made significant contributions to the “Zero Hunger Goal” and to making the global food system more fair and sustainable, but this issue requires greater global cooperation. Erdoğan stated that being able to progress in this struggle depends on the countries that have the largest share with their industry and consumption rates assuming the responsibility of where the world is today and said, “A solidarity in which those with the heaviest burdens are not at the forefront would be incomplete. Because only in this way can a world be established where no one is left behind and resources are not wasted.” he said. Stating that the most important issue missed in the fight against climate change is that single-centered information systems eliminate local wisdom by keeping it in parentheses, Erdoğan said: “Unfortunately, the cyclical life practices that constitute the essence of local cultures have become lost treasures in the modern world. However, ‘Humanity is bigger than five.’ we said. “Then we should see every local culture as a handbook for a nature-friendly life that will offer real solutions to climate change.” he said.
First Lady Erdoğan explained that throughout her zero waste journey, she witnessed many times how willing people are to build a life in harmony with nature, and stated that everyone who adopts the zero waste philosophy becomes an active actor in the fight against climate change. Noting that they wholeheartedly believe that zero waste volunteers are the locomotive power of transformation that will make a more just world possible, Erdoğan said, “At this point, we need your leadership. Because it is first the institutions through the states and then the non-governmental organizations that will carry zero waste from theory to life, from discourse to practice, and thus build a fair world for everyone.” he said. Stating that the starting meridian of a just world passes through this vision of civilization extending from “me to us”, Erdoğan thanked those who contributed to the program.

BREAKING NEWS I President Erdoğan: Zero Waste movement has turned into a global mobilization
“43 MILLION CHILDREN ARE WRITING IN THE CLAWS OF HUNGER IN DIFFERENT REGIONS OF THE WORLD”
President Erdoğan stated that, according to the report published by the United Nations World Food Program, 43 million children are currently suffering from hunger in different parts of the world and said, “One third of the food produced in a year, that is, 1.3 billion tons, is wasted. Every year, more than 3 million children die in the prime of their lives as a result of hunger-related diseases.” he said.
Pointing out that the waste problem is also an important threat on a global scale, Erdoğan said, “This is a truly frightening example that reveals the dire dimensions of the problem of the 1.6 million square kilometer ‘garbage continent’ in the north of the Pacific Ocean, consisting of tons of waste and plastic, which my wife Emine Erdoğan brought up at the opening of the forum. The data we have shows that this problem will deepen rather than decrease. Solid waste, which is 2.1 billion tons in 2023.” “The amount is expected to increase to 3.8 billion tons in 2050 if no measures are taken.” he said.
President Erdoğan continued as follows:
“As Turkey, we see nature both as a legacy entrusted to us by our Lord and as a legacy that must be handed over to future generations, and we meticulously take the necessary steps in terms of environment, climate and waste management. We act with an approach based on green transformation, circular economy and sustainable development, and make intense efforts to minimize the effects of the climate crisis. The Zero Waste Movement, which was launched in 2017 under the leadership of my wife Emine Erdoğan, is today a global environment accepted by the United Nations.” “In 2022, Türkiye was the main presenter and 105 countries were the co-hosts, and the declaration of March 30 as International Zero Waste Day was the most valuable fruit of sincere efforts in this direction.”
“WE WILL CONTINUE OUR WORK WITH DETERMINATION IN LINE WITH OUR 2053 NET ZERO EMISSION TARGET”
President Erdoğan continued his words as follows:
“With the projects and practices implemented with the zero waste movement, we contributed 365 billion liras to our economy. We recycled 90 million tons of waste. We prevented the cutting down of 613 million trees. We prevented the emission of 180 million tons of greenhouse gases, which corresponds to the carbon emissions of 36 million trees. We saved 2 trillion liters of water, 270 billion kilowatt-hours of energy, 60 billion liters of oil and 390 million cubic meters of waste storage space. “Our recovery rate, which was 13 percent in 2017, increased to 37.53 percent in 2025, almost 3 times. We will increase this rate to 60 percent in 2035 and hopefully to 70 percent in 2053. We will continue our work determinedly in line with our 2053 net zero emission target.”
Erdoğan, who turned the Zero Waste Movement, which started in 2017 as a symbol of environmental sensitivity and a deep awareness of responsibility towards future generations, into a global environment and climate struggle in a short period of 9 years, wholeheartedly thanked all the workers, especially those who inspired and pioneered the movement, and hoped that the forum would be beneficial.
President Erdoğan was accompanied by his wife Emine Erdoğan at the gala dinner.
In the program where the short film “Türkiye with Seasons” was watched, Zero Waste Foundation President and COP31 High Level Climate Champion Samed Ağırbaş also made a speech.
A video about the Zero Waste Movement and the vision of the forum was also shown in the program.

BREAKING NEWS I President Erdoğan: Waste problem is a global threat
Breaking News… President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan made important statements at the gala dinner of the ‘Zero Waste Forum’ held at Istanbul Atatürk Airport…
Highlights from President Erdoğan’s speech:
“I wholeheartedly congratulate you on your Istanbul Zero Waste Week. I hope that our exhibitions that raise the awareness of both our children and our visitors will bring good things.
This forum, attended by more than five thousand participants, shows the level Türkiye has reached. I would like to express my gratitude to everyone who contributed to the forum with their ideas and criticism. I hope that the new steps to be taken will be beneficial in advance.
The climate issue is a serious problem that threatens all of humanity, just like war and global epidemics. The impact of these problems is felt even more in a very wide area. Throughout billions of years of world history, the climate has changed in every era. The main issue here is to solve it without causing a crisis.
The countries that have the biggest share in the deepening of the climate crisis are also the countries least affected by this crisis. While there is no drinking water on one side, luxury and rudeness continue on the other side. 43 million children are in the grip of hunger.
We are living in a period where artificial intelligence and new technologies accelerate production and unconscious consumption habits harm nature.
With the Zero Waste movement, 365 billion liras were contributed to our economy. “We prevented 180 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions.”

AK Party Deputy Chairman Yayman spoke in Kütahya: The issue of Türkiye without terrorism is a very important issue for Türkiye.
In his speech at his party’s Kütahya Provincial Advisory Council Meeting, Yayman said that, as the AK Party, they are always at the command and service of the nation.
Stating that very important gains were made during the AK Party governments, Yayman said: “They say ‘There are difficulties in the economy’. Yes, the AK Party has been in power for 24 years, and there have been very serious economic gains and breakthroughs in approximately 22 of those 24 years. In the last two years, there have been problems in the balance of the economy due to the problems arising from the Russia-Ukraine War, the problems in the Middle East, the problems left over from the coronavirus period and the killer Israel and America’s attack on Iran, but I hope these will be resolved.” “We will overcome it again under the leadership of our President.”
YAYMAN NOTED THAT CHP HAS ENTERED AN EXISTENTIAL CRISIS.
Emphasizing that the complainant, the person making the criminal complaint and the person being complained about are CHP members, Yayman said, “The one who gives bribes is a CHP member, the one who takes bribes is a CHP member, the confessor is a CHP member, the secret witness is a CHP member. In other words, the incident takes place within the CHP. There is such a disrespectful image within themselves that they call their leader, whom they previously tried to explain to Türkiye as a candidate of the six-party table, ‘traitor’. What our President, Mr. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, said AK Party is not and will not be anywhere in these discussions that spill over from the court corridors to the streets.” he said.
“LAWAY OF WEAPONS IS A MUST”
Yayman underlined that the Terror-Free Türkiye process is very important and continued as follows:
“The issue of Turkey without terrorism is a state and nation project of the National Solidarity, Fraternity and Democracy Commission. It is an issue of ending terrorism and laying down the weapons of the terrorist organization. It is a very important issue for Turkey, carried out under the chairmanship of our President, Mr. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, and MHP Chairman, Mr. Devlet Bahçeli. Our issue is to raise the standard of Türkiye’s democracy. Our issue is to increase Türkiye’s problem-solving ability. Our issue is a “It is essential to establish a climate of brotherhood and end terrorism not in words but in substance. In this issue, which is being followed by our National Intelligence Directorate and the relevant institutions of the state, it is essential to lay down the weapons. Weapons must not only be laid down, but also burned and removed from circulation forever.”
Stating that the report of the commission, which includes AK Party, MHP, CHP and DEM Party, is important, Yayman emphasized that it is indispensable to lay down weapons as signed by the parties. At the meeting, AK Party Kütahya Deputies İsmail Çağlar Bayırcı, Adil Biçer and Mehmet Demir and AK Party Kütahya Provincial Chair Ceyda Çetin Erenler also made speeches.
