First Lady Erdoğan spoke at the Opening of the Zero Waste Forum: Zero waste is a bridge connecting all roads
In her speech here, First Lady Erdoğan stated that Istanbul is the world’s longest-lasting capital, which carries the common memory of humanity, where civilizations meet, and that they hosted representatives from 183 countries, more than 500 institutions and organizations, and more than 5 thousand participants at the forum today. First Lady Erdoğan stated that Istanbul once again brings cultures together and said, “For this very reason, we see this forum as a historical meeting where the human family is united around a common ideal. This strong international participation is the result of our President’s statement ‘The world is bigger than five because humanity is bigger than five.’ “I think it is a concrete manifestation of his message.” he said.
Stating that he expressed his gratitude to everyone who participated in the forum, Erdoğan continued: “I hope that the synergy that will arise from here will lead to brand new beginnings for our common future. For this meaningful meeting, I would like to thank our Zero Waste Foundation for the great effort they put in organizing the forum. They host one of the most comprehensive international environmental meetings in the world. I congratulate every member of our foundation and applaud them wholeheartedly. I would also like to express my gratitude to our supporting Ministries and the Governorship of Istanbul.”
RESOURCES ARE USED RUDELY
First Lady Erdoğan noted that there is a garbage continent of 1.6 million square kilometers in size, consisting of tons of garbage and plastic, in the north of the Pacific Ocean, and that it stands in the middle of that vast blue as a monument to the drama of humanity using its resources brutally and the bottleneck it passed through. Pointing out that this waste accumulation, which has a surface area almost twice the size of Türkiye, explains the waste and consumption crisis behind the climate crisis, Erdoğan said, “The fact that plastic waste equivalent to 2 thousand garbage trucks every day mixes with the oceans is not only an issue related to waste management. Erdoğan stated that all of these tell an ignored truth, that more has been produced than ever before in human history, and greater prosperity has been accumulated than ever before. “If you look at landfills today, they are full of clothes that would last several generations, items that have been sacrificed to planned obsolescence, and food that we sort out just because we don’t like the shape of it.” Erdogan said, but he also said that millions of people in the world cannot even meet their basic needs.
Stating that even if one looks only at the amount of waste produced, without looking at any other data, it is clearly seen that there is a great injustice growing alongside this prosperity, Erdoğan said, “In other words, the use-throw, throw-forget, think-consume mentality consumes the inherent values of humanity along with natural resources. The consumption culture that develops with industrialization, on the one hand, builds a false comfort zone from plastics, while on the other hand, it greatly damages the common sense and conscience of humanity. MOVED TO A NEW LEVEL
First Lady Erdoğan underlined that they see zero waste as the ticket of humanity’s journey back to the essence, and pointed out that they believe that as it becomes widespread, human values as well as nature will improve. Stating that this understanding forms the intellectual foundations of the Zero Waste Movement, which they started in 2017 by saying ‘The World is Our Common Home’, Erdoğan stated that the Zero Waste Foundation, which they established in 2023, took the zero waste vision to a new level in the international arena with its initiatives carried out on a global scale, and made significant contributions to the integration of zero waste with the topics of climate action, circular economy, sustainable cities, resource efficiency, food systems and social resilience.

First Lady Erdoğan said:
“The fact that this year’s forum coincides with the COP31 Climate Summit, which will be hosted by Türkiye, is an important opportunity to explain the strategic value of zero waste in the fight against climate change. Because although there are many ways to combat climate change, zero waste is a bridge that unites all these ways. In fact, it is the most transformative power of the climate struggle. Therefore, we see this year’s forum as an important milestone on the way to the COP31 Climate Summit, which will be hosted by Türkiye. We propose zero waste as a climate action before the summit. I believe that the forum Each dialogue discussed within the scope will make significant contributions to understanding the central role of zero waste. Every year, 5.8 trillion plates of food are wasted in the field, on the table, in restaurants and in the market. We use almost one third of the agricultural land just to produce the food that will be wasted. Moreover, this scale of waste brings about the deterioration of ecosystems. “14 percent of this is due to food waste. When we look at the human cost, we see an equally heavy and sad picture. We live in a world where 673 million people are struggling with hunger and more than 2 billion people are undernourished.”
IT IS A VERY HEAVY BURDEN OF CONSCIENCE
First Lady Erdoğan explained that half of the children who died before the age of 5 died of hunger, and even while speaking in this hall today, a child in one corner of the world is struggling to survive in the grip of hunger. Mentioning that a mother or father is consumed with the grief of not being able to feed their child, Erdoğan said, “The most painful part is that we cannot eliminate this grave contradiction, even though we know that we can end global hunger by saving only a quarter of the food we throw away. While on the one hand, garbage bins are overflowing and untouched foods are loaded into garbage trucks, on the other hand, empty plates and fading hopes are a heavy burden of conscience for all of us.” he said.
Pointing out that many people have the right to every wasted bite, whether their survival depends on that bite or not, Erdoğan emphasized that 60 percent of food waste occurs at home. Underlining that Türkiye has carried out exemplary work on food waste, First Lady Erdoğan said, “We reduced waste by 40 percent with the ‘Bread Waste Prevention Campaign’ that we launched in 2008. During our G-20 Term Presidency in 2015, we brought the theme of ‘Reducing Food Losses and Waste within the Scope of Sustainable Food Systems’ to the international agenda. As a result of these efforts, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization “The Technical Platform for Measuring and Reducing Food Loss and Waste was established in Rome in 2020. We reached millions of citizens through the ‘Protect Your Food, Protect Your Table’ campaign, which we implemented in cooperation with the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization. This initiative was shown as an example of best practice by the United Nations.” gave the information.
Pointing out that by choosing the theme of food waste for “30 March International Zero Waste Day” this year, they have once again brought the issue to the global agenda under the umbrella of the United Nations, Erdogan said that with all these steps, they have made significant contributions to the “Zero Hunger Goal” and to making the global food system more fair and sustainable, but this issue requires greater global cooperation. Erdoğan stated that being able to progress in this struggle depends on the countries that have the largest share with their industry and consumption rates assuming the responsibility of where the world is today and said, “A solidarity in which those with the heaviest burdens are not at the forefront would be incomplete. Because only in this way can a world be established where no one is left behind and resources are not wasted.” he said. Stating that the most important issue missed in the fight against climate change is that single-centered information systems eliminate local wisdom by keeping it in parentheses, Erdoğan said: “Unfortunately, the cyclical life practices that constitute the essence of local cultures have become lost treasures in the modern world. However, ‘Humanity is bigger than five.’ we said. “Then we should see every local culture as a handbook for a nature-friendly life that will offer real solutions to climate change.” he said.

Noting that they wholeheartedly believe that zero waste volunteers are the locomotive power of transformation that will make a more just world possible, Erdoğan said, “At this point, we need your leadership. Because it is first the institutions through the states and then the non-governmental organizations that will carry zero waste from theory to life, from discourse to practice, and thus build a fair world for everyone.” he said. Stating that the starting meridian of a just world passes through this vision of civilization extending from “me to us”, Erdoğan thanked those who contributed to the program.

A CLUSTER STRUCTURE WILL BE CREATED
With the Tech Visa program implemented by the Ministry of Industry and Technology, the way will be paved for high-potential startups from different geographies of the world to operate within Terminal Istanbul. While the rapid adaptation of foreign enterprises to the Turkish market will be ensured through “soft landing” programs, grants, exemptions and incentive mechanisms, domestic enterprises will also be supported to expand into global markets. While the candidates could not obtain an absolute majority to be elected in the first two rounds of voting, it was later learned that Erol withdrew his candidacy. In the third round of voting, Öztrak was elected as CHP Group Chairman.

At the CHP closed Turkish Grand National Assembly Group Meeting, following the Group Presidency vote, a vote was taken for the two group deputy chairpersonships.
Balıkesir Deputy Serkan Sarı, İzmir Deputy Rahmi Aşın Türeli, Ordu Deputy Mustafa Adıgüzel, Kars Deputy İnan Akgün Alp, Kütahya Deputy Ali Fazıl Kasap and İzmir Deputy Sevda Erdan Kılıç participated in the election.
As a result of the voting, İzmir MPs Sevda Erdan Kılıç and Rahmi Aşın Türeli were elected as CHP Group Deputy Chairmen.

THE NUMBER OF INCIDENTS DECREASED
Minister Çiftçi, who also shared the data regarding the incidents in which firearms were used by motorcycle, said:
“In the period between January 1 and July 16 of last year, there were 165 incidents in which a firearm was used on a motorcycle. In the same period of this year, the number of incidents decreased to 46. Thus, a decrease in these incidents was achieved.”
Çiftçi stated that when the same periods are compared, the number of people who lost their lives in the incidents decreased from 17 to 9, and the number of those injured decreased from 81 to 15.
Stating that the results obtained show the reward of the determined struggle carried out by the security units on the field, Çiftçi concluded his words as follows:
“Each incident is a serious security issue that we must focus on with the same sensitivity. Our goal is not only to reduce the number of incidents, but also to completely eliminate the action capacity of armed criminal organizations. We will not allow those who threaten Türkiye’s security, regardless of the tools and methods they use.”
