Infantino’s reelection in doubt as rights group opposes 4-term bid
Human rights organization FairSquare has urged FIFA to rule Gianni Infantino ineligible to seek another term as president, arguing that he has already reached the three-term limit set out in the governing body’s statutes.
The complaint adds another challenge to Infantino’s bid for reelection as pressure mounts ahead of next year’s FIFA Congress in Morocco, where the 56-year-old Swiss is expected to seek a fourth term covering the 2027-31 cycle.
FIFA presidents are limited to three terms in office. But in 2022, Infantino successfully argued that his first period as president, which began in 2016 after the resignation of Sepp Blatter and ended in 2019, should not count because he had completed an interrupted mandate.
FIFA’s Council unanimously endorsed that interpretation in December 2022, ruling that the 2016-19 period did not constitute a full presidential term.
FairSquare disputes that decision.
In a letter to FIFA’s Governance, Audit and Compliance Committee, known as the GACC, the organization argued that FIFA cannot create an exception to its own term-limit rules to allow Infantino to remain in power.
“The complaint we have filed provides clear evidence that this is a clear breach of the rules and one that sets a very dangerous precedent,” FairSquare director Nicholas McGeehan told Reuters.
“The rules state clearly that three presidential terms is the maximum allowed. FIFA can’t simply circumvent this rule, which serves as a check on presidential power, by saying that his first term doesn’t count.”
The complaint was prepared with assistance from Miguel Maduro, the former head of FIFA’s independent Governance and Review Committee. Maduro said term limits were a central part of the reforms FIFA adopted in 2016 following the corruption scandal that engulfed the organization under Blatter.
“The principle of term limits was a fundamental aspect of the 2016 reform aimed at limiting power, and the rule introduced is clear: no FIFA president can serve more than three terms of office,” Maduro said.
“Trying to carve out an exception to such a rule for Mr. Infantino reveals both a resistance to the principle of term limits and how some at FIFA conceive of rules not as rules but as obstacles to be circumvented.”
Pressure builds around Infantino
The term-limit challenge comes as Infantino faces growing opposition over his leadership and a controversial plan to create a $20 billion FIFA subsidiary linked to the organization’s competitions.
FIFA had proposed selling as much as a 20% stake in the subsidiary to private equity investors, with the aim of raising about $4.2 billion. The plan triggered a backlash inside and outside the organization.
Kevin Lamour, FIFA’s chief operating officer, publicly criticized the proposal last month, saying FIFA employees had been “deceived” about the plan and describing it as “the project of one person.”
“Our mission … is to serve football, not to serve the personal interests of a person who, unfortunately, believes he embodies FIFA when he is supposed to be at its service,” Lamour said.
FIFA said Monday that Lamour’s employment had ended on Aug. 17.
“FIFA can confirm that the working relationship between FIFA and Kevin Lamour as FIFA’s Chief Operating Officer has ended on 17 August 2026,” a FIFA spokesperson said. “FIFA thanks Kevin for his two years of service and wishes him the best of luck for the future. No further comment will be made on the matter.”
Lamour joined FIFA’s senior leadership team in November 2024 after previously working within Infantino’s inner circle during the campaign that led to Infantino’s election in 2016.
His departure came shortly after Carlos Cordeiro, a senior adviser to Infantino, resigned in protest of the commercial rights proposal, calling it “a bad deal for football.” Infantino withdrew the proposal later that day, but the controversy has continued to reverberate through FIFA.
UEFA, the Asian Football Confederation and CONCACAF last week called for an independent review of Infantino’s conduct. Sources familiar with the situation said the three confederations viewed the FairSquare complaint as a potential opening for Infantino to step aside.
Infantino continues to have strong backing from the African and South American confederations, but the growing opposition means his reelection campaign, once widely viewed as a formality, is facing a significantly more difficult political landscape.
Scottish FA joins opposition
National associations have also begun to publicly distance themselves from Infantino.
Scottish Football Association Chief Executive Ian Maxwell told the BBC on Monday that Scotland would not support Infantino’s reelection.
The opposition from UEFA, the AFC and CONCACAF represents a significant challenge given the influence of the confederations within FIFA’s political structure.
The election is scheduled for March 18, 2027, in Morocco.
FairSquare also questioned why FIFA has never publicly explained the reasoning behind its 2022 decision to exclude Infantino’s first period in office from the term limit.
McGeehan said the lack of transparency raised further questions about the legitimacy of the decision.
“The fact they didn’t provide any reasoning to support this claim, and that they announced the apparent decision two days before the final of the Qatar 2022 World Cup, suggests that they knew full well that there was no basis to discount Infantino’s first term,” he said.
FIFA did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the FairSquare complaint.
Political neutrality
The latest complaint is not FairSquare’s first attempt to challenge Infantino’s conduct.
The organization filed a complaint with the International Olympic Committee over Infantino’s alleged breach of the IOC’s rules on political neutrality following his public support for U.S. President Donald Trump. The complaint was rejected last month.
Infantino has been an IOC member since 2020.

Galatasaray turn to Sörloth as Icardi replacement search heats up
Galatasaray have stepped up their search for a new striker, with Alexander Sörloth emerging as a leading target after the Norwegian responded positively to initial contact with the Turkish champions.
The move comes after a disappointing opening to the 2026-27 Trendyol Süper Lig season and the departure of Mauro Icardi, who left the club this summer after his contract expired without an agreement on a renewal.
Icardi departed as Galatasaray’s all-time leading foreign goalscorer, scoring 77 goals in 134 appearances across all competitions. During his time in Istanbul, the Argentine helped the club win four consecutive Süper Lig titles, a Turkish Cup and a Turkish Super Cup.
His departure has left Galatasaray with a major hole in their attack alongside Victor Osimhen, who scored both goals in the team’s 2-2 draw with newly promoted Çorum FK on Aug. 14.
The result immediately increased pressure on the club’s management. Supporters at Rams Park voiced their frustration with chants of “yönetim istifa,” calling for the board to resign.
Galatasaray have since accelerated their transfer plans, with strengthening the center-forward position now among their priorities.
Sörloth has emerged as the club’s latest target, and Turkish reports, including those citing Sözcü, say Galatasaray have already made initial contact with the 30-year-old’s camp.
The response was reportedly positive.
Galatasaray president Dursun Özbek is also said to have approved the move, with reports suggesting further talks could take place in Istanbul in the coming days.
Sörloth currently plays for Atletico Madrid, where he joined in August 2024 after leaving Villarreal in a transfer reported to be worth about 32 million euros. He is under contract with the Spanish club until June 2028.
The Norwegian has established himself as a reliable scoring option in Spain, while his previous experience in Türkiye makes him an especially attractive target for Galatasaray.

Sörloth spent the 2019-20 season on loan at Trabzonspor from Crystal Palace and enjoyed a standout campaign. He scored 24 goals in 34 Süper Lig appearances to finish as the league’s top scorer and added further goals in the Turkish Cup and Europa League.
He finished that season with 33 goals in 49 matches across all competitions and helped Trabzonspor win the Turkish Cup.
That spell remains one of the strongest seasons of his career and could work in Galatasaray’s favor as the club attempts to convince him to return to Türkiye.
The financial side of the deal, however, could prove considerably more difficult.
Atletico are understood to be seeking a transfer fee of around 40 million euros, while reports have suggested Sörloth would want a salary package of between 10 million and 12 million euros per year to leave Spain for Istanbul.
Galatasaray have also explored the possibility of taking the striker on loan with an obligation to buy, a structure that could make the deal easier to complete financially.
The club would also need to consider the Süper Lig’s foreign-player regulations. Bringing in an experienced foreign striker over the age threshold would require Galatasaray to make room within their squad, potentially forcing the departure or reclassification of another foreign player.
Sörloth is not the only option under consideration.
If negotiations with Atletico fail, Galatasaray are reported to have identified Bayer Leverkusen striker Patrik Schick as a possible alternative. Sörloth has also attracted interest from other clubs, including previous attention from Fenerbahçe.
Atletico, meanwhile, are considering changes to their attacking group and are open to player sales as they reshape their squad.
No formal Galatasaray bid for Sörloth had been accepted as of Tuesday, with negotiations still at an early stage.

Sultans of Net launch EuroVolley title defense against Latvia
Türkiye begin their title defense at the 2026 CEV Women’s European Volleyball Championship on Friday against Latvia, opening their campaign in front of a home crowd in Istanbul with expectations high after another trophy-filled season.
The tournament runs through Sept. 6 and is co-hosted by Türkiye, Czechia, Azerbaijan and Sweden. Türkiye will host Pool A matches and the later knockout stages in Istanbul, with the final scheduled for Sept. 6 at Sinan Erdem Sports Hall.
The Sultans of the Net enter as European champions and one of the world’s leading teams after winning the 2026 Volleyball Nations League.
Türkiye defeated Brazil 3-1 in the VNL final in Macau last month, adding another major trophy to a remarkable period under Italian coach Daniele Santarelli.
Strong favorites
Türkiye won its first European Championship title in 2023 and has continued to establish itself among the world’s elite. The team also won the VNL in 2023, reached the 2025 World Championship final and finished fourth at the Paris Olympics.
At the 2026 VNL, Türkiye finished fourth in the preliminary phase before beating Canada and China in the knockout rounds and overcoming Brazil in the final.

That form has made Türkiye one of the favorites to retain the European crown, while playing at home adds another advantage.
Santarelli has a deep roster at his disposal. Melissa Vargas enters EuroVolley as the 2026 VNL MVP. Ebrar Karakurt, Hande Baladın, İlkin Aydın and Saliha Şahin provide attacking options, while Zehra Güneş, veteran captain Eda Erdem and Sinead Jack-Kısal strengthen the middle.
Cansu Özbay and Elif Şahin give Santarelli options at setter, while Gizem Örge and Simge Aköz provide experience at libero.
The squad’s depth should allow Santarelli to rotate players following a demanding VNL campaign while maintaining a high level throughout the group stage.
Latvia return
Latvia are back at the European Championship after a long absence. Their last senior appearance came in the 1990s, when they finished eighth in 1997 and ninth in both 1993 and 1995.
Their return reflects steady progress in recent years. Latvia were runners-up in the 2025 European Silver League and have improved through the lower levels of European competition.
Türkiye selected Latvia as its host-nation invitation team for the 2026 championship.
The opening match nevertheless presents a major challenge for Latvia. Türkiye’s superior ranking, recent international success and greater experience make the hosts heavy favorites.
For Latvia, the match offers a valuable opportunity to measure their development against one of Europe’s strongest teams.
Baladın welcomes the pressure
Baladın said the chance to defend the European title at home creates pressure but also gives the team additional motivation.
“We are playing in a major tournament like the European Championship, at home, and as the reigning European champions. Of course we want to keep this title,” Baladın told NTV.
She acknowledged the expectations surrounding the team but said the support from Turkish fans can turn that pressure into energy.
“This naturally creates big pressure, but at the same time it really excites us more to play in front of our own crowd, feeling their energy, support and positive emotions,” she said. “I hope that at Sinan Erdem we can raise this energy to the highest level together and experience many beautiful moments.”
Baladın has become an important part of Türkiye’s rise, developing into a versatile outside hitter after beginning her career as a middle blocker.
Her ambitions extend beyond the European Championship. Türkiye’s long-term target is the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, where the team hopes to win the Olympic medal that has so far eluded it.
Türkiye reached the quarterfinals at Tokyo 2020 and the semifinals at Paris 2024, ultimately finishing fourth.
Road through Pool A
Türkiye’s Pool A schedule is:
Aug. 21: Türkiye vs. Latvia, 7 p.m.
Aug. 23: Slovenia vs. Türkiye, 7 p.m.
Aug. 24: Türkiye vs. Hungary, 7 p.m.
Aug. 26: Germany vs. Türkiye, 7 p.m.
Aug. 28: Türkiye vs. Poland, 7 p.m.
The top four teams in each pool advance to the Round of 16.
Latvia represents the most favorable opening matchup on paper, while Slovenia, Germany and Poland are expected to provide tougher tests.
A strong victory on Friday would give Türkiye an early boost in the standings and set ratio while allowing Santarelli to manage his squad ahead of the more demanding fixtures.
The home atmosphere could also prove decisive. Turkish fans are renowned for creating intense environments at international volleyball matches, and Sinan Erdem is expected to be packed for the opening night.
With Istanbul also hosting later knockout rounds, Türkiye could potentially play its way to the final without leaving familiar territory.

Makhachev defends UFC title with record 17th-straight win
Islam Makhachev successfully defended his UFC welterweight title Saturday, beating Ireland’s Ian Machado Garry by unanimous decision in the main event of UFC 330 in Philadelphia while setting a UFC record.
With the victory, Russia’s Makhachev etched his name alone in the UFC record books, extending his winning streak to 17 consecutive fights and surpassing UFC Hall of Famer Anderson Silva’s historic 16-fight mark set from 2006-13.
Makhachev dictated the tempo throughout the 25-minute championship tilt, neutralizing the challenger with suffocating top control and chain wrestling while mixing in dynamic striking, including a damaging second-round head kick.
Garry, bidding to become only the second undisputed UFC champion hailing from Ireland, stayed diligent in defensive scrambles on the mat to survive danger, but could not mount enough offense to sway the judges’ scorecards.
“I believed in my heart and soul I was better than him tonight, and he won,” Machado Garry Garry said inside the Octagon following the decision (49-46, 49-46, 48-47).
“No complaints, no excuses. I’m 28, I have a decade of domination already. This man won tonight,” he added.
“He gave me a hard time, but I still prove it every fight,” Makhachev said of grinding out the victory against the challenger in the championship rounds.
He took his share of head kicks in his first title defense, notably in the third round that did most of the cosmetic damage, yet bested a record set by Silva that had stood for 13 years.
“If he keeps going like he says he’s going to keep going, it might never be beaten,” UFC CEO Dana White said.
The 34-year-old Makhachev nearly ended the fight in the second when he threw his left foot and caught Machado Garry flush with a headkick that dropped the challenger to his rear end.
Makhachev pounced with a series of punches that had the sellout crowd of 19,238 fans roaring in anticipation of a quick finish, only for Machado Garry – serenaded throughout with obscenity-laced chants – to hold on and finish the round.
Machado Garry (17-2) won the third round on all three scorecards and rallied in the fifth round with seven significant strikes landed to none for Makhachev.
Yet it wasn’t enough to topple one of UFC’s great fighters.
Makhachev – who held the lightweight championship and has seven total wins in title fights – continues to dominate no matter the weight class.

Bangladesh dominate Australia for 1st-ever Test win Down Under
A dominant Bangladesh stunned Australia to win the opening Test by a crushing nine wickets in Darwin on Sunday for a historic first-ever Test victory on Australian soil.
After bowling Australia out for 284 and needing 57 to win, the visitors cruised past the total when Mominul Haque slashed Beau Webster to the backward point boundary.
Unfancied Bangladesh dominated a full-strength Australia throughout and the margin of victory will send shock waves through the cricketing world.
“This is the biggest win so far for Bangladesh in any format,” captain Najmul Hossain Shanto said.
“Going forward, we want to do something special in the future,” he said.
“I’m very happy, proud of myself and the way the boys played. We did a lot of hard work.”
After bowling Australia out for 198 in the first innings, the visitors always looked the more likely to win.
They kept the pressure on throughout Sunday and didn’t panic when Cameron Green (104) brought up his third Test century after lunch on day four.
Green was offered no real support from his teammates and the Bangladeshis kept taking vital scalps to leave Australia on the ropes, with Mehidy Hasan Miraz taking 5-66.
Najmul said the shock win was the result of Bangladesh players, especially the fast bowlers, putting more emphasis on red-ball cricket.
“Five years ago pacers didn’t want to play Tests, but we’ve been playing lots of Test cricket and they are giving importance to the Test format,” he said.
“They want to play, want to perform, want to be world-class. That is the mindset they now have.”
Australia captain Pat Cummins was full of praise for their opponents, admitting Bangladesh were better in every aspect.
It was Bangladesh’s first Test win in Australia, at the third attempt.
“They outplayed us in all facets, they were patient and disciplined,” said Cummins.
“I thought our prep was spot-on, no excuses.”
“They played well. We had to find a way to bat longer and then we couldn’t penetrate with the ball.”
Aussies out of answers
The visitors went into the match with most observers giving them no chance of winning.
Their only warm-up game, against a Cricket Australia XI, ended in a big loss that included a second-innings collapse where they were all out for 54.
But they completely outplayed the Australians and won every session, batting, bowling and catching better than their more illustrious counterparts.
Australia, fielding their best possible team, looked out of sorts from the beginning.
Their batting failed in the first innings when they were bowled out on the opening day, then their much-vaunted bowling attack struggled against the gritty Bangladesh batsmen.
Led by a maiden Test century from opener Tanzid Hasan, Bangladesh made 426 and kept Australia in the field for 138 overs in Darwin’s heat and humidity.
The bowlers then showed great patience Saturday to make regular breakthroughs and keep Australia under the cosh.
When Australia resumed Sunday on 161-4, their hopes lay with Alex Carey and Green.
Carey lived dangerously in the opening 30 minutes, twice edging seamer Hasan Mahmud through the vacant slips cordon for boundaries.
But on 30 off-spinner Mehidy produced a beautiful ball, pitching in line then turning sharply to take Carey’s outside edge to wicketkeeper Litton Das.
He struck again soon after, bowling Webster for five to leave Australia 193-6 and in deep trouble.
A famous victory edged closer when Cummins pushed forward to a Mehidy delivery and got an inside edge to short leg, where Shadman Islam took a sharp chance.
Australia were 207-7, still 21 runs behind Bangladesh’s first-innings total.
Green and Mitchell Starc batted sensibly to ensure Bangladesh had to bat again.
Starc fell for 18 caught behind, but Green was playing well.
But despite looking increasingly comfortable, he was undone when a Hasan ball kept low, hit the toe end of his bat and cannoned into the stumps.
Mehidy wrapped up the innings when he trapped Nathan Lyon plumb in front leg before.
Despite losing Tanzid in the first over, Mominul and Shadman cruised to victory.

Kasımpaşa spoil Salah’s Süper Lig debut, Gençlerbirliği stun Fener
Mohamed Salah’s highly anticipated Turkish Süper Lig debut for Trabzonspor was spoiled by minnows Kasımpaşa on Saturday when they held the visiting Black Sea club to a 1-1 draw in their 2026-27 season opener.
The 34-year-old Egyptian captain, who completed a high-profile free transfer to Trabzonspor on a two-year contract following nine seasons with Liverpool, entered the match as a 58th-minute substitute on the right wing shortly after Kasımpaşa had equalized.
Trabzonspor had seized the lead late in the first half when youngster Noah Saviolo finished clinically at the back post in the 43rd minute, connecting with Metehan Mimaroğlu’s cross from the left wing.
However, Kasımpaşa leveled the score in the 56th minute when Adrian Benedyczak calmly converted a penalty after Güven Yalçın was brought down in the box by Wagner Pina.
Salah created several scoring opportunities during his 32 minutes on the pitch. In the 69th minute, his dangerous free kick found Stefan Savic, whose header was tipped away by Kasımpaşa goalkeeper Andreas Gianniotis.
On the resulting play, Mustafa Eskihellaç squared the ball across the face of the goal, but Paul Onuachu was unable to apply the finishing touch.
Salah had a chance to claim a debut winner in the 70th minute when he controlled a pass inside the penalty area, only to fire his effort over the crossbar.
Six minutes later, he volleyed narrowly wide at the far post after latching onto a recycled cross from Eskihellaç.
The draw extends a frustrating trend for Trabzonspor, who have now dropped points in eight of their last 10 Süper Lig season openers played on the road.
“It’s a sad start today. It was a game we had to be victorious in, but we couldn’t succeed. Thursday is really important; we play a match in Europe, and the opponent is far better than us,” Trabzonspor head coach Fatih Tekke said after the match.
Trabzonspor, who finished third in the Süper Lig last season and won the Turkish Cup, are scheduled to face Hungarian club Ferencvaros in the Europa League playoff round on Aug. 20.
Salah’s move to Trabzonspor ended months of transfer speculation following the earlier collapse of negotiations with rivals Beşiktaş.
The forward had announced in March that he would leave Liverpool at the conclusion of the 2025-26 campaign despite having signed a contract extension at Anfield in April 2025.
Salah departed as Liverpool’s third-highest goalscorer of all time, tallying 257 goals in 442 appearances while capturing two Premier League titles and a UEFA Champions League trophy.
Gençlerbirliği stun Fenerbahçe
In Ankara, meanwhile, newly promoted Gençlerbirliği produced the opening weekend’s biggest upset, coming from behind to defeat title contenders Fenerbahçe 2-1.
Fenerbahçe made a dominant opening push and broke the deadlock in the 13th minute when Anderson Talisca converted from close range following a low cross from the left flank.
Talisca nearly doubled the lead before halftime, but his powerful header from a corner crashed against the crossbar.
Despite Fenerbahçe’s early control, Gençlerbirliği equalized in the 37th minute. After winning possession in midfield, the hosts launched a swift counterattack that Franco Tongya finished with precision.
Gençlerbirliği completed the comeback in the 56th minute when Abdurrahim Dursun delivered an inviting cross from the left wing and Oğulcan Ülgün rose above the defense to head home the winning goal.
Fenerbahçe launched a sustained late assault seeking an equalizer, but Gençlerbirliği goalkeeper Irfan Can Eğribayat made critical saves to deny long-range attempts from Talisca.
Late efforts from Vedat Muriqi, Milan Skriniar and Mason Greenwood all missed the target as Gençlerbirliği’s defense held firm to claim all three points in their return to the top flight.
Elsewhere, Rizespor earned a dramatic 1-0 away victory over Konyaspor thanks to a stoppage-time penalty from Qazim Laçi.
After a scoreless 90 minutes that yielded few clear opportunities, Rizespor won a penalty deep into injury time when Emrecan Bulut was brought down inside the box by a Konyaspor defender in the 93rd minute.
Laçi stepped up four minutes later and sent the goalkeeper the wrong way in the 97th minute to secure the three points for the visitors on opening weekend.
Alanyaspor, Gaziantep FK draw
Alanyaspor and Gaziantep FK played to a 1-1 draw in their season opener.
Alanyaspor took the lead early in the second half, but Gaziantep FK drew even in the 61st minute when Deian Sorescu dispossessed an opponent in midfield, embarked on a surging run toward the penalty area, and drilled a long-range strike into the net.
Gaziantep FK pushed for a winner, but Alanyaspor goalkeeper Victor produced a late save on a curling effort from Kacper Kozlowski to ensure both teams left with a point.

Lukaku trains with Fenerbahçe for 1st time ahead of Süper Lig debut
Romelu Lukaku took part in his first training session with Fenerbahçe on Thursday as the Belgian striker began settling into his new team ahead of Saturday’s Süper Lig opener against Gençlerbirliği.
Lukaku joined his new teammates at Fenerbahçe’s Can Bartu Facilities as the Yellow-Navy Blues continued preparations for their opening league match in Ankara.
The 33-year-old completed his permanent move to Fenerbahçe from Napoli earlier this week, adding a high-profile attacking option to a squad seeking to challenge for the Turkish title.
Under coach İsmail Kartal, the session began indoors with strength and endurance exercises before the players moved onto the field for warmups, agility and coordination drills.
The squad then split into two groups for 5-on-2 possession and passing exercises before finishing the workout with small-sided scrimmages.

Lukaku’s arrival has generated considerable attention in Türkiye, not only because of his pedigree but also because of his personal connection to the country. He spent part of his childhood in Türkiye while his father, Roger Lukaku, played for Gençlerbirliği in the 1990s.
The striker arrives with an extensive resume that includes spells at Anderlecht, Chelsea, West Bromwich Albion, Everton, Manchester United, Inter Milan, Roma and Napoli. He is also Belgium’s all-time leading scorer, with 93 international goals.
Lukaku endured an injury-hit final season at Napoli, making only seven club appearances, but he played in all six of Belgium’s matches at the 2026 World Cup and scored three goals as Belgium reached the quarterfinals.
He has said he feels fully fit and ready to contribute at Fenerbahçe, describing the transfer as both an honor and an emotional return to a country that formed part of his early life.
Fenerbahçe completed the transfer for a reported fee of about 6 million euros plus performance-related bonuses, with his contract running through June 2028, according to Italian reports and Transfermarkt.
The club has made significant additions to its attack this summer, with Mason Greenwood and Vedat Muriqi among the other arrivals as Fenerbahçe look to mount a serious title challenge.
Fenerbahçe finished second behind Galatasaray in recent seasons and are aiming to end their long wait for the Süper Lig championship.
The club have also made progress in Champions League qualifying, adding another layer to an increasingly demanding start to the season.
Fenerbahçe will hold their final training session Friday before traveling to Ankara for Saturday’s match at Eryaman Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 9:30 p.m. local time.
