Turkish, British top diplomats discuss Europe security in phone call

Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has spoken by phone with his British counterpart, David Lammy, to discuss the latest discourse surrounding Europe’s security architecture, Turkish diplomatic sources announced on March 10.

class=”cf”>

The two top diplomats exchanged views on the latest developments in the Russia-Ukraine war during the phone call, the sources said.

In this context, they assessed ongoing discussions on European security, emphasizing the crucial role of non-European Union countries in maintaining stability on the continent.

Bilateral relations were also on the agenda, with a focus on cooperation in the defense industry and the situation in Syria, the sources added.

EU leaders recently decided to step up armament efforts and establish a new deterrent military structure following U.S. President Donald Trump’s remarks suggesting that Washington may no longer be committed to Europe’s security.

Türkiye has become one of the non-EU NATO countries that can possibly contribute to European security as the second largest army of the alliance.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan attended a videoconference meeting organized by the EU on March 7, following an extraordinary summit in Brussels. He stressed that Türkiye and the EU should align their efforts in shaping Europe’s security strategy.

Meanwhile, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced he would visit Türkiye to discuss Ankara’s potential role in European security. Stating that Poland has started exploring “non-standard formats” to strengthen its defense posture, Tusk said his visit would focus on ways to enhance Türkiye’s involvement in regional security efforts.

“All indications show that Türkiye is ready for this,” Tusk said, adding that discussions would center on Ankara’s possible contributions to Europe’s security mechanisms.

Presidential memorandum regarding the extension of the Turkish soldier’s duty in Somalia is in the Turkish Grand National Assembly.

Published

on

In the memorandum sent to the Presidency of the Turkish Grand National Assembly with the signature of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, it was stated that Somalia’s security and stability are important for the entire region.

In the memorandum, it is emphasized that Türkiye has established multifaceted cooperation in political, social, economic and security fields with the Federal Government of Somalia since 2011, for the benefit of the people of both countries, and said, “The reputation that our country has in the eyes of the Somali people and the trust that has been built in our country over the years have been an important factor in the uninterrupted continuation of our cooperation. Within the scope of the Framework Agreement on Military Education, Technical and Scientific Cooperation in the Field of Military Education, Military Training Cooperation Agreement, Defense Industry Cooperation Agreement and Military Financial Cooperation Agreement, which are in force between the two countries, security and stability in Somalia are ensured.” “Our training, assistance and consultancy activities continue, and support has been provided for more than ten years together with the international community to restructure the Somali defense and security forces and ensure that they reach the capacity to combat terrorism.” statements were included.

In the memorandum, which stated that although the Somali defense and security forces have sufficient potential in terms of personnel and other resources, they could not reach the desired level in fulfilling their duties due to economic difficulties, it was noted that the Federal Government of Somalia requested assistance, including the support to be provided by the Armed Forces, from the Republic of Turkey against terrorism, piracy, illegal fishing, all kinds of smuggling and other threats, in line with the objectives agreed in the Defense and Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement.

The following statements were included in the memorandum:

“In this respect, within the scope of the objectives agreed in the aforementioned agreement and the decision of the United Nations Security Council on 1 December 2023 regarding Somalia’s fight against terrorism, it is envisaged that, on the basis of our holistic approach towards the stability and prosperity of Somalia, Somalia will effectively benefit from its own resources by helping to protect its economic resources and thus bring the defense and security forces to a level that will ensure and maintain the security of the country.

Thanks to this cooperation with Somalia, it will be possible to secure Somalia’s economic resources and contribute to stability and security in the region, which is of key importance for our foreign trade and maritime transport, and to strengthen our friendship with Somalia, as well as to reinforce our country’s support to the efforts carried out against terrorism, piracy and armed robbery in the Gulf of Aden, the Arabian Sea and adjacent regions, which endanger international peace and stability and can negatively affect our national interests.

With these considerations, the border, extent, amount and time will be determined and determined by the President, in accordance with the United Nations Security Council resolutions and our obligations arising from international law, by using cooperation opportunities with third countries and international organizations when necessary, within the scope of the implementation of international agreements concluded between Somalia and our country, including Somalia’s maritime jurisdiction areas, in order to support the activities of Turkish Armed Forces elements to ensure the security of Somalia against terrorism, piracy, illegal fishing, all kinds of smuggling and other threats. “I would like to inform you that the duration of the permission given by the Decision of the Turkish Grand National Assembly dated 27 July 2024 and numbered 1423, in accordance with Article 92 of the Constitution, will be extended for 2 years, starting from 27 July 2026, in order to be assigned to the regions to be jointly determined by the two countries, in accordance with the rules to be determined exclusively, and to make the necessary arrangements in accordance with the principles to be determined by the President.”

Statement from Director of Communications Duran regarding the EU’s “Common Understanding” document: It once again reveals the lack of vision

Published

on

Director of Communications Burhanettin Duran, regarding the “Common Understanding” document published by the European Union (EU) on July 15, said, “This approach, which ignores Türkiye’s candidate country status, once again reveals the EU’s lack of vision for the common future.” he said.

Duran made a statement on his NSosyal account regarding the evaluations regarding Türkiye in the “Common Understanding” document published by the EU on July 15.

Stating that the evaluations in question are far from objectivity and strategic foresight, Duran said:

“This approach, which ignores Türkiye’s candidate country status, once again reveals the EU’s lack of vision for the common future. While Türkiye’s indispensable role in terms of Euro-Atlantic security was clearly confirmed at the NATO Ankara Summit, statements that ignore this fact do not contribute to constructive dialogue. Repeated one-sided discourses on the Eastern Mediterranean and Cyprus issues do not reflect international law and historical facts. A permanent solution is only possible with an impartial and realistic approach based on equity. The EU’s priority “It is extremely important that it adopts a more responsible discourse, away from judgments and based on mutual respect and common interest.”
