An epic written from scratch – Last Minute News
The Zero Waste Movement, which started on September 27, 2017 under the auspices of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s wife Emine Erdoğan, quickly turned into the world’s largest environmental movement. In the voting held at the UN General Assembly on December 14, 2022, where Türkiye was the main presenter and 105 countries were the co-presenters, March 30 was declared as ‘International Zero Waste Day’. In the period from the beginning of the project to the end of 2025; A total of 90 million tons of waste turned into raw materials instead of being garbage. The recovery rate, which was 13 percent in 2017, was increased to 37.53 percent in 2025. 365 billion liras were contributed to the country’s economy. Türkiye aims to increase the recovery rate to 60 percent in 2035 and 70 percent in 2053. Thanks to the collected waste, 270 billion kilowatt-hours of energy were saved, equivalent to the 1-year electricity needs of 54 million households. 60 billion liters of oil were saved, covering more than the 1-year fuel consumption of all vehicles in Türkiye.

THE SEA BREATHED
Another prominent achievement was saving landfill space, which is equivalent to the size of approximately 55 thousand football fields. Thanks to the project, 613 million trees, which correspond to 7 percent of the forests in Türkiye, were prevented from being cut down. For the cleaning works within the scope of the project, waste collection services are provided in a total of 348 coastal facilities through 64 licensed waste reception vessels and 183 waste reception facilities. By 2026, more than 325 thousand tons of marine garbage has been collected and disposed of. The seas were saved from 23 thousand truckloads of garbage. The Deposit Management System, one of the most critical stages of the Zero Waste Movement, has been put into use in 53 provinces as of today, following the pilot application implemented in Sakarya in January 2025. The number of users registered in the system increased to 117 thousand. While the number of packages returned to date has exceeded 12.5 million, a raw material income of approximately 3 million lira was obtained.

FIRST SIGNATURE FROM ERDOĞAN
Within the scope of the project, there were also ‘firsts’ that went down in history. First Lady Erdoğan made a speech at the special session on ‘Zero Waste’ held on the margins of the 77th UN General Assembly, becoming the first Turkish spouse to address the assembly. On 12 April 2023, the ‘UN Advisory Board of High-Level Personalities on Zero Waste’ was officially established. The advisory board, chaired by First Lady Erdoğan, included members from 13 countries, as well as UN Deputy Secretary-General Guy Bernard Ryder. Within the scope of the 78th UN General Assembly, the “Towards a Global Zero Waste Movement” event was held at the Türkevi in New York under the leadership of First Lady Erdoğan. At the event, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan signed the ‘Global Zero Waste Goodwill Declaration’. Zero Waste Project; It was awarded a total of seven international awards by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in 2018, the UN Development Program (UNDP) and the UN Human Settlements Program (UN-Habitat) in 2021, the Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly and the World Bank in 2022, the Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly for the second time in 2024, and the Green Organization in 2026.

LET’S ALL TOGETHER SAY ‘STOP’ TO THIS DEVELOPMENT
President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s wife, Emine Erdoğan, said, “Every year, 2.3 billion tons of food, equivalent to 5.8 trillion plates of food, are lost without being consumed in the world.” In her post on her NSosyal account on the occasion of March 30 International Zero Waste Day, First Lady Erdoğan noted the following: “March 30 International Zero Waste Day, which we celebrate for the 4th year this year with the theme of ‘Food Waste’, reveals an invisible loss. Every year, 2.3 billion tons of food, equivalent to 5.8 trillion plates of food, are lost without being consumed in the world. Every morsel that is wasted is not only a blessing, but also the fertility of the soil and water.” It is a decrease in the value and reward of labor. We all say ‘stop!’ to this situation. Let’s say.”

Minister Çiftçi, who made important statements about APP, fake license plates and in-car multimedia systems, said, “The license plate issue is not just a matter of shape. It is an extremely important issue in terms of public security, the peace of our country and our general security strategies. “THE MUNICIPALITIES GRANTED THE MOST INVESTIGATION PERMISSIONS ARE AK PARTY MUNICIPALITIES”
Evaluating the allegations of actions against opposition parties in the investigations against municipalities, Çiftçi said, “After the elections of March 31, 2024, 3 thousand 224 investigations were carried out by the relevant units of our Ministry of Internal Affairs within the scope of denunciations, complaints and special inspections. As a result of the investigation / preliminary examinations carried out by civil inspectors, our Inspection Board prepared 22 preliminary examination reports. In these preliminary examination reports, it was decided to grant 6 investigation permissions on 31 matters about Yavaş. 31 subjects were collected under 6 headings. Ankara The Council of State annulled 2 of the 6 investigation permits against the Metropolitan Municipality Mayor. It was decided to grant partial investigation permission to other relevant municipal officials. 12 investigation reports were submitted to the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office for investigation in accordance with the general provisions. “1 deposit report has been sent to the Ministry of Treasury and Finance for action in accordance with the financial legislation, and 1 compensation report has been sent to Ankara Metropolitan Municipality for the collection of public damage. The process regarding 12 investigations / preliminary examinations carried out by civil inspectors continues. General inspection continues in Ankara Metropolitan Municipality and its affiliated institutions within the scope of routine winter inspections.”
“PLATE PLATE ISSUE IS A SECURITY ISSUE: THE PURPOSE IS NOT PUNISHMENT, BUT A STANDARD”
Minister Çiftçi, who made a statement at a time when the inspections regarding APP license plates were intensely discussed in the public, emphasized that their main purpose in license plate applications is not to impose fines, but to ensure public safety by maintaining standards. Stating that the plate is not just a formal element, Çiftçi stated that it serves a critical function as vehicle identification. Minister Çiftçi made public statements regarding the increasing discussions regarding inspections and sanctions regarding APP license plates in recent days. Stating that their aim is not to victimize citizens, Çiftçi said that they aim to ensure unity and security in practice.
“PLATE PLATE IS VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION”
Emphasizing that the plate is an identity for a vehicle, Çiftçi said, “Just as a person has an identity, the plate is also the identity of the vehicle. For this reason, it should only be issued by authorized institutions.” Stating that there are security elements on the plates, Çiftçi noted that the TŞOF seal, TR phrase, hologram, security stripe and crescent-star signs are the basic elements of the standards. Reminding that the license plates printed as of January 1, 2024 include a QR code and a 12-digit serial number, Çiftçi stated that the license plates without a QR code will not automatically be considered fake, and that other security elements are sufficient.
“NO PENALTIES FOR PLATES WITH BOLD LETTERS”
Çiftçi stated that license plates with letters and numbers that are thicker than normal remain valid, provided that they comply with the standards, and that vehicle owners are not obliged to renew these plates. He also particularly emphasized that no penalty will be imposed during traffic inspections due to such license plates.
“NUMBER OF VEHICLES IS INCREASING RAPIDLY”
Drawing attention to the increase in the number of motor vehicles in Türkiye, Çiftçi announced that the number of vehicles has increased from 23.2 million to 33.9 million since 2019, while the number of motorcycles has increased from 3.3 million to 7.2 million. Stating that the total number of registered vehicles exceeds 34.5 million, Çiftçi said that a vehicle park of this size can only be inspected with a strong technological infrastructure and standard license plate system.
“APP PLATES CREATE A SECURITY VULNERABILITY”
Stating that non-standard APP plates cannot be read properly by electronic control systems, Çiftçi said that this situation creates a serious security vulnerability. He emphasized that it is essential to maintain license plate standards for systems such as Radar, PTS, KGS and EDS to operate effectively.
“THE PURPOSE IS PEACE AND LIFE SAFETY”
Stating that the regulations regarding drivers’ in-car display devices are also evaluated, Çiftçi stated that their basic approach is to ensure a balance that will protect life safety in traffic. “Our goal is to protect the peace and law of our citizens,” he said.

Stating that with this step, 12/36 hours working order will be implemented throughout the country, Çiftçi emphasized that the regulation will improve the working conditions of police officers and increase motivation.
A HARD MESSAGE TO STREET GANGS
Giving a message of determination in the fight against street gangs, Çiftçi said, “We cannot afford to lose even a single child. Our stance against these gang activities is clear.” Stating that the necessary instructions were given to the security units, Çiftçi stated that the operations will continue increasingly. He announced that 358 people were caught and brought to justice in operations carried out across Türkiye last week.
DETERMINATION IN THE FIGHT AGAINST DRUGS
Pointing out that drugs are the main source of crimes, Çiftçi stated that the fight is being continued in many aspects. Stating that the coast guard and intelligence elements, as well as the police and gendarmerie units, will take an active role, Çiftçi said that they are acting with the aim of “draining the source” against this threat, which especially targets young people. Declaring that 13 tons of drugs, 37.8 million synthetic pharmaceuticals and 13 thousand cannabis-skunk roots were seized in the operations carried out between January 1 and March 22, 2026, Çiftçi stated that these data reveal the intensity of the struggle in the field.
