Digital occupation is a national security issue
In today’s world, where traditional wars are increasingly replaced by unconventional warfare methods, foreign digital media platforms are no longer just means of communication; They have become strategic actors targeting the internal security, social peace and political stability of countries. A ‘digital occupation’ prevails both in our country and all over the world. Digital channels, which collect the data of billions of people, process this data and use it for their desired purposes, especially in the advertising industry, have also taken over the advertising market in Türkiye. Approximately 158 billion TL was transferred from Türkiye to platforms such as Google, Instagram, WhatsApp, YouTube, Facebook, TikTok and X through advertising in 2024.

While this situation harms the national and local media, on the other hand, experts emphasize that digital media platforms are a ‘national security problem’. These platforms also play a leading role in activities carried out against Türkiye at the global level. In addition, while media organizations broadcasting in Türkiye are subject to inspection by RTÜK, digital media platforms are doing whatever they want, so to speak, and supporting the spread of disinformation and creating the ground for chaos.

DATA IS LEAKED
The most detailed data of millions of people registered in ‘big data’ is used for political and intelligence purposes by individuals and organizations that hold foreign digital platforms. With this data, manipulation in elections, perception management in political news, and disinformation in disasters are carried out. With the information obtained from people, the person’s preferences are analyzed and the political and agenda-related information specific to him/her is highlighted and the preferences are aimed to be directly guided. While the platforms play the leading role in all foreign-supported operations and manipulations carried out against Türkiye, foreign intelligence services use this information to fuel chaos in Türkiye with ‘social mapping’ studies.

ADVERTISING REVENUES REACHED 158 BILLION TL
While the share of local press in advertising expenditures in Türkiye was 80 percent in 2014, this rate dropped to 52 percent in 2019 and 26 percent in 2024. Foreign digital platforms, which had 20 percent of this rate in 2014, reached 48 percent in 2019 and 74 percent in 2024. In 2024, the money foreign media platforms earned from the Turkish market alone was approximately 158 billion lira.

‘WE FINANCE’
Speaking to SABAH, experts explained the magnitude of the danger and the precautions that should be taken at the level of the state, institutions and individuals in Türkiye. Kastamonu University Artificial Intelligence Studies Coordinator Prof. Dr. Tunay Kamer stated that foreign platforms are conducting perception operations against Türkiye with the advertising revenues they earn in Türkiye. Kamer said, “This situation is not just an economic loss, it means that we finance our own siege with our own resources. Every algorithm left unchecked carries the potential of an intelligence element whose identity has not been checked. Security no longer starts at border gates, but in the virtual world. Protecting our data, managing our perceptions and securing our digital identity have become an integral part of national security.”

Kamer emphasized that the solution is ‘digital sovereignty’ and noted that the development of local and national major language models is not a choice, but a national necessity. Kamer emphasized that an approach focused on risk management and cyber resilience is essential. Kamer also pointed out that in this context, there are simultaneous and complementary responsibilities at the level of the state, institutions and individuals. “The state needs to demand Türkiye-specific risk assessment reports and transparency commitments from foreign digital platforms. Institutions should put into effect rapid response and verification protocols that will work on a 24/7 basis during crisis periods. This will significantly reduce information pollution during disasters, elections and social sensitivity periods. Citizens should also act with an awareness that investigates the source of digital content and uses official channels as a confirmation mechanism, instead of sharing digital content without questioning.
‘CULTURAL EROSION’ MARMARA
Head of the Department of Interpersonal Communication at the University, Prof. Dr. Serhat Ulağlı drew attention to the effects of digital platforms on the social structure. Stating that with the Industry 5.0 process, the individual has become increasingly isolated and a prisoner of his own production, Ulağlı said, “Uncontrolled digital content, implicit messages and subthreshold manipulations damage the social structure and shake the trust in institutions.”

Emphasizing that content that is not compatible with the Turkish-Islamic social structure causes a cultural collapse, Ulağlı stated that especially young people are manipulated through role models on these platforms and directed to civil disobedience and chaotic actions. Ulağlı said that monitoring digital channels is a matter of national security.

“The first week of the war shook the balance, not Iran.”
According to Şahin, the shooting of a school in Minab, Iran, in the first hours of the war and the death of many girls caused deep outrage in the global public. Stating that this incident affected the international conscience, Şahin said, “This situation, which occurred in the very first hours of the war, caused the USA and Israel to suffer a serious loss of legitimacy in the global public opinion.”
Deputy Şahin stated that the attacks had a result contrary to expectations in Iran’s domestic politics and said, “Before the attack, there was serious tension between secular segments and regime supporters. However, foreign intervention united Iranian society within itself.”
“A STRONG SENSE OF SOLIDARITY ALSO IN SHIA COMMUNITIES”
Stating that the attack on Iran’s religious leader Ali Khamenei and the regime debates also produced a different result, Şahin said that such developments created a strong sense of solidarity not only in Iran but also in Shiite communities around the world.
Şahin also emphasized that the possibility of Iran closing the Strait of Hormuz creates serious turbulence in the global economy. Stating that this development directly affects the world energy markets, Şahin stated that the responsibility has begun to be attributed largely to the USA and Israel in the international community.
Stating that important discussions have begun in US domestic politics, Şahin stated that criticism against the Donald Trump administration has increased, especially in the context of the upcoming elections. Şahin said that the American public is starting to question Israel’s influence in US foreign policy more openly.
Stating that the Gulf countries are faced with a situation stuck in the middle of the war, Şahin said that the fact that the US military bases in the region cannot provide the expected protection in terms of security has initiated a serious strategic questioning in these countries.
Stating that there has been a remarkable transformation in European public opinion, Şahin said that while sympathy for Iran has emerged in some European societies, especially in Spain, criticism towards Israel has increased.
“A PROLONGED WAR COULD FURTHER CONSOLIDATED IRAN INTERNALLY”
Şahin also stated that the cautious and silent attitude of China and Russia, which are seen as Iran’s allies, throughout the process attracted attention in the international community. He stated that this situation could start a new discussion between the allies of the countries in question.
Stating that the balances in the region may become more complicated if the war is prolonged, Şahin made the following assessment:
“A protracted war could further consolidate Iran internally. In turn, it is possible that the political costs for the United States and Israel will increase both regionally and globally.”
Şahin completed his evaluation with the following words:
“We need to wish for the best, but we also need to be prepared for the worst-case scenario. Re-engaging diplomacy and negotiation channels is vital for regional and world peace.”

A total of 293 people were recruited. However, only 60-70 of them were recruited through advertisements.” Claiming that the principles of merit and transparency were not observed in recruitment, Demir said, “The daughter-in-law of the deputy mayor, the son of the Kırklareli district chairman, the wife of the central district chairman, the disciplinary board member, the nephew of the Tekirdağ CHP deputy, the elder brothers, sisters and wives of the brothers of the municipal council members were recruited.
