Minister Kurum met with foreign press members in Hatay

Published

on

As part of Türkiye’s hosting of the 31st Conference of the Parties (COP31) of the United Nations (UN) Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the closing session of the “Türkiye’s Path to COP31: Resilient Cities” panel, which started yesterday, was held in a hotel with the participation of ministers from different countries and managers of international organizations.

MINISTER CAME TOGETHER WITH MEMBERS OF THE INSTITUTION FOREIGN PRESS

Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change Murat Kurum, who came together with foreign press members who came to Türkiye under the coordination of the Directorate of Communications after the session, said, “Cities in the world are no longer talked about only with their size, population and economy. Today, the real power of cities is measured by how prepared they are for disasters and how safe a future they can offer to their people. This is why Hatay, where we are currently located, stands in a very special place. The climate issue is no longer just a matter for experts.” he said.

“CLIMATE CHANGE DIRECTLY TOUCHES LIVES”

“Climate change is a global crisis, but every geography’s pain, need, priority and expectation of solution are different,” he said, and continued his speech as follows: “In my opinion, another remarkable result is that people talk about climate change the most when it directly affects their lives. They talk about it when there is a fire, flood, storm, landslide, water or food crisis in that country or city. The climate issue suddenly ceases to be an abstract title after those disasters and turns into a concrete reality that concerns people’s home, work, health and safety. “At COP31, we talk about the issue in terms of people’s real needs. The words “human”, “society” and “life” are mostly used in the posts.

“AN ISSUE THAT TOUCHES PEOPLE’S LIVES”

“So, the issue for everyone is to protect life, security, future and living together. This is exactly the reason why we center resilient cities in our COP31 journey, because today the city is strong with its energy, water, infrastructure, transportation, waste management, green areas and most importantly, the sense of trust it gives to its people. That is why we are talking about the issue in terms of people’s real needs at COP31, because the fight against climate change is no longer just an environmental policy, it is a policy that touches people’s lives and also protects their lives.” “It’s a matter.”

“WE TESTED THIS UNDERSTANDING IN THE FIELD AFTER FEBRUARY 6”

“People live with two important realities such as earthquake risk and climate crisis. We do not see earthquake resistance and adaptation to climate change as two separate goals. We consider these as two basic elements that complement each other of a resilient city. The programs we made in Hatay within the scope of the COP31 Resilient Cities regional event are actually a part of this understanding. We wanted to explain the issue of sustainable cities here, not with theoretical titles, but with the experiences we gained in the field. We tested this understanding in the most severe way after February 6. In 11 provinces and 14 cities. “We experienced two very large earthquakes that affected millions of people.”

ANATOLIAN PLANE MODEL

“After the earthquake, we saw our experiences that brought people to their feet as the “Anatolian Plane Model”. This model, which came to life in 11 provinces, does not leave post-disaster shelter to the mercy of the market. Today, unfortunately, all the states of the world have shelved the social state perspective and understanding. While even the most developed countries of the world leave their citizens to the mercy of the insurance company in earthquakes and disasters, today Turkey, under the leadership of our President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, has achieved unprecedented success in the world in 2 years. He wrote an unprecedented success story and held his nation’s hand on the first day and never let go. If our 11 provinces stood up in an area of 110 thousand square kilometers today, this has shown the power, power and love of the Republic of Turkey for its nation. We are implementing an understanding and policy that never leaves our nation alone in any disaster. It is very important, you can make a promise, but it is important to fulfill that promise.”

“WE ALL SIGNED THE HATAY DECLARATION TOGETHER”

Stating that they are experiencing a historic moment on behalf of humanity and cities with all ministers today, the institution said, “We signed the Hatay declaration together. We declared to all humanity that we will move from policy to practice, from recovery to transformation, and from global commitments to local action. We decided to advance climate-resistant cities, urban transformation in this sense, strengthen multi-level governance, and empower local governments as the key actors of implementation. We declared that we will increase financing for resilient and sustainable cities. We declared that we will increase urban energy transformation and low-carbon “We promised to accelerate development and encourage nature-based solutions and human-centered approaches. In summary, we committed to all humanity to transform the COP31 results into ways of implementation at the city level and to share successful practices brotherly. As the president of COP31, I would like to express my gratitude to all countries that signed this declaration on behalf of all humanity.” he said.

We have always recorded positive growth in the last 23 years. We have experienced an average annual real growth of 5.4 percent. We have been through great difficulties, we have overcome them all. We are always in turbulent, chaotic periods. In this period, countries that can maintain stability, have a strong economy and ensure social peace rise and shine rapidly. Everyone wants to see that place as their address. Of course, there is also the fact that this is what we are experiencing. “As a result of our economic development in society, we managed to become the 16th largest economy in the world with a value of 1.6 trillion dollars in 23 years. We were the 21st in 2002. We reached an export figure of 400 billion dollars in goods and services, an increase of approximately 8 times. TRUST IS VERY IMPORTANT
