Türkiye strengthens ‘Steel Dome’ system with laser defense

Defense company Aselsan has successfully tested the mobile laser weapon system, designed to safeguard military bases, airports, power plants and petroleum refineries against drone threats.

class=”cf”>

Named GÖKBERK, the advanced laser system seeks to bolster the country’s Steel Dome system — an integrated multilayered air defense system, intended to provide the protection of Türkiye’s entire air space.

The laser system utilizes a locally developed laser source for physical target elimination and an electronic jamming system for disabling UAVs.

Equipped with enhanced superior, AI-supported tracking algorithms and excellent laser beam output quality, it detects, tracks and neutralizes threats with high precision.

Test footage also showcased GÖKBERK’s ability to automatically track and destroy FPV drones, proving its effectiveness against evolving battlefield threats. The advanced system also operates continuously with an advanced cooling system, ensuring long-duration, cost-efficient engagement.

A strategic component of the Steel Dome, the advanced system combines İHTAR, another anti-drone system developed by Aselsan. The system is expected to play a crucial role in defending critical infrastructure and adapting to asymmetric air threats.

Using data from GÖKBERK’s firing tests and trials in various weather situations, the system’s research and improvement efforts continue at present.

Industry and Technology Minister Mehmet Fatih Kacır highlighted the newly developed system’s importance in a post on social media, stating, “This time, no missiles, but only lasers. In the defense sector, our technological and product capabilities are growing and improving.”

Presidential memorandum regarding the extension of the Turkish soldier’s duty in Somalia is in the Turkish Grand National Assembly.

Published

on

In the memorandum sent to the Presidency of the Turkish Grand National Assembly with the signature of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, it was stated that Somalia’s security and stability are important for the entire region.

In the memorandum, it is emphasized that Türkiye has established multifaceted cooperation in political, social, economic and security fields with the Federal Government of Somalia since 2011, for the benefit of the people of both countries, and said, “The reputation that our country has in the eyes of the Somali people and the trust that has been built in our country over the years have been an important factor in the uninterrupted continuation of our cooperation. Within the scope of the Framework Agreement on Military Education, Technical and Scientific Cooperation in the Field of Military Education, Military Training Cooperation Agreement, Defense Industry Cooperation Agreement and Military Financial Cooperation Agreement, which are in force between the two countries, security and stability in Somalia are ensured.” “Our training, assistance and consultancy activities continue, and support has been provided for more than ten years together with the international community to restructure the Somali defense and security forces and ensure that they reach the capacity to combat terrorism.” statements were included.

In the memorandum, which stated that although the Somali defense and security forces have sufficient potential in terms of personnel and other resources, they could not reach the desired level in fulfilling their duties due to economic difficulties, it was noted that the Federal Government of Somalia requested assistance, including the support to be provided by the Armed Forces, from the Republic of Turkey against terrorism, piracy, illegal fishing, all kinds of smuggling and other threats, in line with the objectives agreed in the Defense and Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement.

The following statements were included in the memorandum:

“In this respect, within the scope of the objectives agreed in the aforementioned agreement and the decision of the United Nations Security Council on 1 December 2023 regarding Somalia’s fight against terrorism, it is envisaged that, on the basis of our holistic approach towards the stability and prosperity of Somalia, Somalia will effectively benefit from its own resources by helping to protect its economic resources and thus bring the defense and security forces to a level that will ensure and maintain the security of the country.

Thanks to this cooperation with Somalia, it will be possible to secure Somalia’s economic resources and contribute to stability and security in the region, which is of key importance for our foreign trade and maritime transport, and to strengthen our friendship with Somalia, as well as to reinforce our country’s support to the efforts carried out against terrorism, piracy and armed robbery in the Gulf of Aden, the Arabian Sea and adjacent regions, which endanger international peace and stability and can negatively affect our national interests.

With these considerations, the border, extent, amount and time will be determined and determined by the President, in accordance with the United Nations Security Council resolutions and our obligations arising from international law, by using cooperation opportunities with third countries and international organizations when necessary, within the scope of the implementation of international agreements concluded between Somalia and our country, including Somalia’s maritime jurisdiction areas, in order to support the activities of Turkish Armed Forces elements to ensure the security of Somalia against terrorism, piracy, illegal fishing, all kinds of smuggling and other threats. “I would like to inform you that the duration of the permission given by the Decision of the Turkish Grand National Assembly dated 27 July 2024 and numbered 1423, in accordance with Article 92 of the Constitution, will be extended for 2 years, starting from 27 July 2026, in order to be assigned to the regions to be jointly determined by the two countries, in accordance with the rules to be determined exclusively, and to make the necessary arrangements in accordance with the principles to be determined by the President.”

Statement from Director of Communications Duran regarding the EU’s “Common Understanding” document: It once again reveals the lack of vision

Published

on

Director of Communications Burhanettin Duran, regarding the “Common Understanding” document published by the European Union (EU) on July 15, said, “This approach, which ignores Türkiye’s candidate country status, once again reveals the EU’s lack of vision for the common future.” he said.

Duran made a statement on his NSosyal account regarding the evaluations regarding Türkiye in the “Common Understanding” document published by the EU on July 15.

Stating that the evaluations in question are far from objectivity and strategic foresight, Duran said:

“This approach, which ignores Türkiye’s candidate country status, once again reveals the EU’s lack of vision for the common future. While Türkiye’s indispensable role in terms of Euro-Atlantic security was clearly confirmed at the NATO Ankara Summit, statements that ignore this fact do not contribute to constructive dialogue. Repeated one-sided discourses on the Eastern Mediterranean and Cyprus issues do not reflect international law and historical facts. A permanent solution is only possible with an impartial and realistic approach based on equity. The EU’s priority “It is extremely important that it adopts a more responsible discourse, away from judgments and based on mutual respect and common interest.”

Hasan Akgün before the judge – Last Minute News

Published

on

The trial of 31 defendants, including Hasan Akgün, who was suspended from his post as Büyükçekmece Mayor and arrested, began on allegations of corruption. 6 detained defendants, including Hasan Akgün, were present at the hearing held at the Istanbul 27th High Criminal Court. Some of the detained defendants and their lawyers also attended the hearing.

Making his defense at the hearing, Akgün said that the allegations against him were purely assumptions and said, “I stand before you as a citizen who is transparent, open, ready to be held accountable and trusts in justice. I do not accept the reports about me in any way. Such denunciations and statements have been made because there is hostility towards me. Is there any mayor against whom a CIMER application has not been made due to such hostilities? Why am I being tried while such denunciations are not taken seriously for other mayors?” he said. Continuing his defense, the defendant Akgün said, regarding the allegation that his children owned property at different times from the project in which Osman Yeşilgülen was one of the land owners, “These allegations are completely unanswered. It is assumed that they do not have the financial power to buy these properties just because they are between the ages of 25-30. Unfortunately, the fact that my children acquired property with their own money was evaluated as laundering the assets resulting from crime in the indictment.” he said.

Akgün stated that as a mayor who built buildings such as schools, nurseries and mosques, people who knew him came to him and said, “They said to me, ‘We will also provide assistance and charity in various works of the municipality such as schools, mosques and nurseries.’ I said ‘Mosques are being built a lot, different things can be done’, but I do not know the details of what was done afterwards.” he said. Stating that he never imagined that his efforts would one day be associated with bribery and extortion, Akgün said, “May God not separate anyone from justice. I demand my release and acquittal.” he said. In his defense, defendant Ömer Kazancı said, “In the indictment, it was written that the villa transfer was made in 2023 and that I started my duty as mayor in 2024. There is an inconsistency. In the indictment, I was portrayed as having called someone while I was not on duty, in bad faith. I stated that I was not responsible for the zoning of the people who came for changes in the project during the construction of the villa, and since it was a detailed issue, I directed them to the zoning director. I did not request money under the name of donation to the basketball branch.” he said. Other detained and undetained defendants also rejected the charges against them and demanded their acquittal. The hearing was postponed until tomorrow to continue taking the defense statements of the other detained defendants.

From the indictment

In the indictment prepared by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, it was requested that the suspect Hasan Akgün be sentenced to a total of 68 years to 183 years in prison for the crimes of ‘establishing and managing a criminal organization for profit’, 11 times ‘taking a bribe’, 2 times ‘extortion by force’ and ‘laundering property values arising from crime’. Prison sentences of varying degrees were requested for the other 30 suspects for various crimes.
