The first confession came, the governor is in custody

Published

on

2 of the 13 people detained within the scope of the Gülistan Doku investigation were arrested the previous day, and a judicial control order was issued for 2 of them. Yesterday, 7 more people, including the son of Tunceli Governor Tuncay Sonel, were sent to the courthouse. Tuncel Sonel, who was suspended by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and launched an investigation on charges of ‘destroying, concealing or altering criminal evidence’, was detained in Elazığ and transferred to Erzurum. Meanwhile, former State Hospital Chief Physician Çağdaş Özdemir, who allegedly had Gülistan Doku’s records deleted, was also detained.

Thus, the number of detainees increased to 15. Celal Altaş, Nurşen Arıkan, Ferhat Güven and Cemile Yücer, among the 9 suspects whose statements were completed within the scope of the investigation, were referred to the court with a request for arrest, and Uğurcan Açıkgöz for judicial control. On the other hand, arrested former police officer Gökhan Ertok admitted that he inserted the spare SIM card sent by Governor Tuncel into his mother’s phone, entered Gülistan Doku’s Instagram and WhatsApp accounts and deleted some of her data. A red notice was also requested for Mustafa Türkay Sonel’s friend Umut Altaş, who was determined to be abroad within the scope of the investigation and an arrest warrant was issued for him.

RECORDS WERE FOUND IN POLNET
It was determined that Gülistan Doku’s records at Tunceli State Hospital, where she went 4 days after she was raped, were deleted. However, it was determined that these records were located on POLNET (Police Information System Network). According to records, Gülistan Doku applied to Tunceli State Hospital 13 times in 2019. The last of these applications, the record on December 31, was deleted along with the records of other patients on January 7-9, 2020. The Ministry of Health appointed an inspector regarding the issue.

HIS FILE WAS SENT TO ERZURUM
During the investigation, sufficient suspicion of crime was reached that the then Governor of Tunceli, Tuncay Sonel, had committed acts of destroying, hiding or altering criminal evidence. Thereupon, upon the instructions of the Minister of Internal Affairs, Mustafa Çiftçi, an administrative investigation was initiated and an inspector was appointed. Tunceli Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office also evaluated that the crimes attributed to Sonel were personal crimes. The file regarding Sonel was sent to Erzurum Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office. A detention order was issued for Tuncay Sonel, who was suspended. Tuncay Sonel’s proceedings will be carried out by the Erzurum Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office.

I ACCESSED YOUR ACCOUNT
Dismissed police officer Gökhan Ertok was arrested the previous day due to the possibility of tampering with evidence. Ertok, who requested to benefit from effective remorse, admitted that he inserted the spare SIM card, which was reissued by Gülistan Doku’s family and taken from the family by the then Governor Tuncay Sonel, and sent to him through his bodyguard Şükrü Eroğlu, on January 17 and 18, 2020, into his mother’s old phone that he had previously used. Ertok, who admitted that he accessed Gülistan Doku’s Instagram account in this way, said that he then accessed the WhatsApp application and performed some transactions there.

US political scientist Norton: Land grabbing and exploitation of resources became visible with the Palestinian struggle!

US political scientist Norton: Land grabbing and exploitation of resources became visible with the Palestinian struggle!

THE POWER OF THE UNIVERSITY AND ACADEMY IS STILL LIMITED

Evaluating the approach of universities and media organizations in the West to the Palestine issue, Norton said that students and academics have a more open attitude in academic circles, but they do not have enough power over decision-making structures.

Norton, however, pointed out that the recent increase in unionization movements, especially among graduate students, could change the balance of power in the academy, and emphasized that this process could “significantly transform the academic ecosystem.”

“DECOLONIZED THOUGHT IS NOT NOURISHED FROM A SINGLE CULTURAL SOURCE”

When asked what the decolonized idea would be like in practice, Norton replied that “it has not yet fully emerged, but some of its features can already be seen.”

Emphasizing that the decolonization of thought should not be stuck on a single cultural basis, on the contrary, it should have a pluralistic structure, Norton said, “We can also see the features that this structure may have. It will not only be fed by a single cultural source, but will be fed by more than one cultural source. People who talk about politics will benefit from these different sources when expressing their views and ideas in public.” he said. Emphasizing that social media accelerates the circulation of information, but that this area is under the control of large companies and oligarchs in the West, Norton said, “One of the problems in the West is that social media is very strongly controlled by companies and oligarchs. This needs to be broken.” he said. Pointing out that Istanbul can become one of the global information production centers, Norton stated that the Palestinian press provides a remarkable example in this regard. “The Palestinian press stands out for two things: one is their extraordinary courage, and the other is that they actually produce the news,” Norton said. made his assessment.

Stating that centers such as Brazil and Argentina, as well as Istanbul, can be effective in the production of news and ideas on a global scale, Norton said that Türkiye’s historical and cultural heritage provides a significant advantage in this respect.

“Decolonized Film Days”, organized as part of the side events of the World Decolonization Forum 2026, will be held at Istanbul Atlas Cinema on 13-14 May. The program, in which nine films are presented to moviegoers free of charge, brings a wide range of topics, from the history of colonialism to the search for social justice, to the big screen. Activity; It brings up many critical issues through cinema, from the division in Cyprus to the “Stolen Generation” tragedy in Australia, from indigenous resistance in South America to the genocide in Myanmar. The main aim of the program stands out as building a critical bridge between the colonial practices of the past and today’s digital and cultural power relations.

World-famous Iranian director Majid Majidi and producer Mehmet Bozdağ took part as speakers in the panel titled “Decolonizing the Screen”, moderated by director Faysal Soysal, organized within the scope of the event.
Stating that we need to teach children our history and culture, Majid Majidi said, “Hollywood productions often produce narratives that legitimize the policies of the West. Even superhero movies draw an image of the West that saves the world. Today, they come to us not with bombs or missiles, but by making us forget our culture, values and memory. In the films I made, I tried to explain our own culture and human values and to deal with people from their essence.”

Producer Mehmet Bozdağ drew attention to the standardizing effect of global digital platforms and stated that local stories should not break away from their roots in order to find a universal response: “The one who dominates history continues its colonialism by destroying the historical consciousness. We have to redesign the world with our own identity and spirit. If we do not tell those ‘clean stories’, we will lose ourselves.”
